At the same time, Tromsø has reached the 80,000-strong population mark. We welcome both Tromsø residents and visitors to our anniversary exhibition, composed of photographs from the last 180 years!

An attractive city

Northern Norway’s largest city is built on a number of major infrastructure projects – the Tromsø Bridge, which secured a connection to the mainland when it was built, the tunnel system that makes it easier to go from one side of the island to the other, and the airport that connects the city to the rest of the world, to name a few. Large workplaces and knowledge centers such as the municipality, UiT and UNN make the city important and attractive.

The glue of society

Yet perhaps there is something completely different that makes Tromsø exactly Tromsø. Throughout the museum’s history, we have collected and preserved historical photographs, but have also been concerned with documenting the present. In the photo collection, we find not only the big city stories, but also the many small everyday stories. The photos show gymnastics performances, trade, concerts, fashion, ski trips. The glue of society is found in our free time with sports, culture and outdoor activities.

A photographic journey through time

In Time Travel Tromsø you will encounter photographs that were once exposed on heavy glass plates, but also images that have been created digitally. They are taken by professionals and amateurs, and together they take us on a journey through time through the museum’s photo collection, and Tromsø, from 1870 to the present day.

Produksjonsliste

Concept: Marthe T.
