From Reindeer to Dromedary

When Perspektivet Museum was founded in 1996, the photo collections from the former municipal museum were transferred to the new institution. There was little knowledge about the contents of the collections.

A Cultural Treasure

Today, after several years of systematization, we can state that the collections are a cultural treasure of considerable value! Ever since the childhood of photography, the photographic picture has been an important source of knowledge about the past.

The magic of photography

The photography was for a long time primarily considered an exact and mechanical copy of the world; a realistic description of architecture, work and leisure, interior details and styles, clothes and fashion. Today, however, we have also become aware of the more hidden message that the photography contains. The magic of the photography, created by the photographer’s will, sensibility and empathy, stays in our memories and awakes wondering.

Informative initiator

The exhibition «From reindeers to dromedary» is not only informative, – the photographs of people and situations also give room for reflection and thought. The exhibition is a celebration of the amateur photographers who once caught little moments of their own time on film, and thus enabled the population of Tromsø today to meet with the life and people of Tromsø in former times.

About the exhibition

Project Manager: Astri Fremmerlid / Perspektivet Museum
Photographer and dark room work: Mari Hildung / Perspektivet Museum

The exhibition opened on September 9th the year 2000 at Kulturhuset in Tromsø, and was later also shown in Perspektivets premises at Storgata 95.

In connection with Mari Hildung starting the systematization of the photo collection, she, in collaboration with Astri Fremmerlid, selected the negatives that were copied in the museum’s darkroom.
